Summary of Our Project

This web-based learning project is mainly intended to explore the special foods in Kaohsiung area. We carry out an intensive research into these five kinds of foods. They include (1) Flag and Drum Cake, (2) Kapok Cake, (3) Water Caltrop, (4) Milkfish and (5) Cabrilla.

(1) Flag and Drum Cake, the so-called Chi Ku Bin, is widely thought of as a typical representative of local speciality. This cake, as a matter of fact, absorbs public attention during Chi Ku Festival.

(2) In addition to Flag and Drum Cake, Kapok Cake is another dessert worth tasting. Kapok is, of course, the chief ingredient of this cake and it is also viewed as the City Flower.

(3) You can easily find Water Caltrops in Tsou-ying District. Have a bite of it, and you're sure to cast aside all your worries. Most important of all, it tastes even more delicious with sauces.

(4) Going up to Er-a-liao, in Kaohsiung County, we can't help but take a try for Milkfish and Cabrilla, two of the most famous species. With them, you can have as many different kinds of cuisine as you want.

This project not only helps us better understand the special foods in our hometown, but it also shows interesting facts to the tourists.

Summary of Our Project

This program focuses on the rediscovery of the fading tobacco culture. As we trace the history of tobacco industry, we by all means lead our students to the past and hand down a great cultural heritage. By doing so, students' passion toward this piece of land can be soon waken up. Thus, people and the land they live in link together as flesh and blood.

The Hakka, who live at the foot of the Meinung Mountain, immigrated from the Province of Canton in early times. The conflicts between the Hakka and the Hokkien as well as the inconvenient transportation caused by mountains all contributed effectively to the making of their own unique culture. During the Japanese occupation period, the economic value of tobacco leaves surpassed rice, the main crops from ancient time. Nowadays, however, this traditional agriculture is fading out. The local residents begin to transform their tobacco industry into tourism and fine agriculture. This change, undoubtedly, throw a fresh light on traditional industry.
